Made redundant, new to JSA and Universal Credit, after some advice about process

    You don't have to wait to claim UC if there is any entitlement, it's just best to wait until you've had the final payment from work to maximise your first UC payment.

    I suppose if there turns out to be no entitlement (due to earnings, not savings) you could still open a UC claim, if the mortgage protection policy is contingent on a claim and active jobseeking rather than on actually receiving any money and you feel it's worth the hassle.

    Re freelance for JSA, I believe you get to keep the first £5 of what you earn and then they deduct the rest in full, so the threshold for what you can earn would be £97.04 per week.
