Hello, received a call from 03334339830, saying they are from Sky, talking about getting in touch with people about the upcoming move from copper to fibre, and signing people up for this.

I couldn't wait so the caller agreed to phone later.

I searched the number and it came up as a scam call, overwhelmingly, on various websites.

However, the lady phoned back, and I told her that I checked the number and that this number is associated with scam calls.  She said they get a lot of that, but this call was genuine, and that she could tell me details of the account to confirm this.  She said she was part of a special team set up by Sky to this.

Sky usually contact us by email or letter, not by phone.

Some of the reports on the scam call websites said they do this.

Has anyone experienced this type of call from Sky, maybe from the same number?

Please help.

General consensus on the Sky forums is that it’s some sort of scam - https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/Scam-numbers/td-p/4936873

Phone Sky on a known legitimate number and ask them what is available to you.

    Scam.
They are reasonable and persuasive that's how they succeed. And they will ring back because you've sorted of agreed to listen.
Seems they are picking up on landlines because that largely indicates someone who may older and easily persuaded.

    This is worth a read

So Sky is using Text messages or WhatsApp.

If you have access to BBC iplayer take a look at the Scam Interceptors programme. What you describe is featured on a number of their programmes and they are very manipulative. As mentioned above, contact Sky on a known number from their website

Obviously you need to be aware of scams but TBH there are a few things that although not conclusive can be reassuring, do you have the product they have called about , so are you a Sky broadband/phone customer, often scammers are generic , they have no idea who you use so are ‘vague’ , if they said ‘I’m calling from your ISP’ is a red flag as they clearly don’t know who your ISP is , and if they call a BT customer saying they are from Sky , it’s clearly a scam , if you are a Sky customer and they said it’s Sky they are calling from and know your name and account number etc , it’s more likely to be genuine than a scam .

TBH , I’d hear them out , from what you say , it’s likely to be genuine, obviously if they start asking to download things on your computer or want your bank details that’s not OK , but if (for example) they are just trying to get you onto a newly provided full fibre network from the old copper pair network that seems perfectly normal, you don’t need to accept BTW you can still say no I’m OK on the current copper network.

If your phone currently connects to a regular telephone socket rather than a broadband router phone socket that is even more evidence of it being genuine as that ‘system’ is being replaced by IP telephony delivered via your router if the caller simply says we need to sent you a new router and you connect your phone to that , then how could that disadvantage you .

Or , simplest of all , call Sky yourself on a number you know to be theirs , and ask if they are trying to contact you .

TBH , these reverse caller sites quite often have contradictory entry’s , side by side , one saying scammers another saying genuine, I’ve no confidence in them , scammers have evolved they don’t continually use the same number , they spoof the number they use to look genuine…the reverse look up sites are not much use for scammers but can be useful for legal but nuisance companies selling solar panels , changing power company’s , that type of thing

The number that shows when someone calls you is broadly irrelevant, you can buy a VOIP service from various less regulated places in the world that allows you to set whatever you want to be your caller ID, can change it every call if you want to. Telephone systems are fairly basic in their operation, there is no mechanism to workout if the caller legitimately owns that number or not - this is mainly due to age of the system but it also allows businesses to have various call centres including outsourced ones but all of them appear as if they are the same number calling.

Ultimately if you are interested in Sky Full Fibre then contact them on a known number and ignore the cold calls.

Certainly Sky have in the past used third party call centres to do cold/luke warm sales calls, been there and did that. In my day we didnt have access to your account though and only had your name, telephone number, address and the date you got Sky installed. Was late 90s so less websites to check if a number was legit or not but some didnt believe we were sky and were it happening now no doubt plenty would be listing our number as s scam.

Just say send it in writing and hang up. Giving no details.  They should have them if they're official.
