Live in Carer Council Tax Discount

Hi, after seeing Martins story on GMB, I contacted Runneymede Council as I do in excess of 35 hours care for my mother who I live with. My mother receives the Attendance Allowance lower rate. The council said they will send out the form to apply. I aksed how long will they be back dating it, the adviser said threee months.
Is that correct, as their website was wrong, surely we can back dated it several years?

I think  it's a general rule for most benefits that they will only backdate three months, unless you can show that there is a good reason why you haven't applied before - just not knowing that you were eligible doesn't count.

You always have rights to appeal such decisions, which then forces the Council to go through a process of review and they will inform the law they are applying.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

With coucil tax reductios each coucil sets its own rules.

As this will be seen as you not appling rather than an issue with your applicationn thenn I wouldnt see why they would backdate it at all, so see three months as a bonus.
