SDLT when you have two homes

If I currently own two homes:
A - Main
B - Second
and I sell A in, e.g. Aug 2026, temporarily move to my second home full time, then buy a new main home any time between Aug-26 and Aug-29, will I just pay the normal rate of stamp duty as I'm replacing my main home, NOT the higher rate because I have 2 homes.
This is my understanding of the 3 year rule: I just want to check.

Yes, that is right, if you have been living in home A as your main residence and you buy a new home intending to live in it as your only or main residence. The "replacement" rules then operate in your favour. You should ignore the sloppy .gov.uk guidance to the extent that it (wrongly) suggests it must be your most recent ("previous") residence which has to be sold: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/stamp-duty-land-tax-buying-an-additional-residential-property.1
