Filling in wall chase for cable

I am in the process of fitting a new hard wired doorbell so I have a length of 'bell wire' that I want to hide in a plasterboard wall.
I have cut a shallow chase which is more than deep enought to accomodate the very thin wire and I will need to fill in the chase to make good. Is it acceptable to push the cable into the chase and apply filler direct to the wire or would I need to use some kind of protection for the cable (very thin conduit)? The voltage on the bell circuit is only 16v ac so not a hazardous situation and the chase goes up closely adjacent to the door frame so not likely to be disturbed in future.
Appreciate any advice.

When I did this I cut a thin chase (soft lime plaster so I just used an old tenon saw), stuck the bell wire in, and filled with lightweight surface filler. The wall was skimmed later, so I didn't even have to worry about the finish. Probably not the most professional approach, but it's been fine for a decade and counting....1
