Windows - Cut and Paste

hey all,

this may sound like a silly question but ive always wanted to know this.

lets say you've cut a lot of big files, and you've pasted them in a new folder. because they're big files or perhaps the new folder is in a new hard drive (eg external) it's taking a long time.

What happens to your files if the PC crashes or there's a power cut? does windows copy them first then delete the originals, or is it a straight "bit by bit" move? and if that's the case, how do you retrieve your lost parts?

thanks!:T

  • Good question

Copying from the same partition to the same drive, windows will duplicate the file.

Move (cut & paste) will copy the files, check them & delete the original, however it does not need to do this as the file is not moving anywhere! it stays in the same place and only the pointers to the file need to be updated.

When you go to another drive device, then files are copied, checked & deleted afterwards, if there is a power cut then it has not moved the file or checked it, so the original is still intact.
    Hope that helps

Yes like totalsolutions explained, the original stays intact. say for eg you cancelled the process, what happens??the file remains there. similarly when there is a power cut or system crash, the process is cancelled by the system automatically.
