TThey Will be offering free software for sole traders. Just wait

  • Still waiting on Starling software to go live to test it out but just been informed by my accountant that he will be retiring in April so more stress .

He advised to start looking for a new accountant and sign up for MTD on the HRMC website before April - I am only a non vat sole trader , I normally do a spreadsheet ( costs / expenses ) throughout the year and submit to my accountant .

Any ideas on where to look for a new one and the costs involved. Thanks

Can your existing Accountant recommend (or at least provide contact details for) other local Accountants suitably targeting small business clients?

If your sole trader business is very simple, why do you even need an accountant?

Accounting software does it all if it’s linked to your business bank account and hmrc.

  • Thanks , it is the mileage and allowances I struggle with on the forms and just prefer someone to look over it before submitting .. got a few qoutes in the last few days and the prices start for £100 a month so guess I have to try and learn myself.

Or, pay an accountant for an hour's ad hoc work when you needed it checked. Shouldn't be much more than £100 plus VAT.

  • Thanks , tried several accountants and none will do it - they want me to sign up at a minimum of £40 a month and use their software ..

Still waiting on Starling to provide the software - they say it has been released but still cant acess it - will have to swap to Mettle who offer Freeagent for free which may help in the long run.. Just alot more stress , cost and work with no benefit for me.

just an update - starling lanched their software and not really fit for purpose.. Decided to sign up with Mettle but from May this year they will be charging for using ATM withdrawals - card replacements - cash deposits - also 20 day waiting list -

I do also have an old Natwest business account which I have not used in a few years ( kept open to access my past transactions ) - could I use the natwest details to access the free software ?
