Some cars need the key to be re-synced with the car, you might want to check the owners' forums to see if there's a procedure to do that. I had it with a more recent Golf.
If the key needs to be re-synced then why are both key not working (can understand one)?

I removed the cap of the door handle so I can open it with a key. All the doors open and close perfectly using the key in the door handle. The car is not worth a great deal and was thinking of replacing it in the next 12-18 months so I might make do with how it is and leave it to the new owner to sort out!

Because the keys agree with each other about what the code should be, but the car disagrees equally with both of them?

I don't understand how the car can change the code on it own? You're probably right though just doesn't seem logical to me. Just now, I also put a new battery in one of the fobs but that did nothing either. Can't really complain the car is nearly 20 years old!

Well nothing to be lost by trying re-syncing anyway.

You have removed any security sticker from the underside of the battery ?

The car battery was fitted by a mechanic. Should I remove it and check?

He means the fob battery, sometimes they have a non conductive sticker.
Some brands have little blue dots on the negative side which are a very bitter tasting dye, I suspect that they are not conductive either.

So if a child tries to eat one, the bitter taste should make them spit it out, and stains their tongue blue.
If you have a blue-tongued child and you can find all the spat out batteries, all is well, if you can't it is off to A&E.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Just an update, been out earlier in the car, obviously using the door handle to open the car. Got home locked the car and tried the fob and it actually worked! Everything opened and then pressed it again and it locked. I think what made the difference was locking it manually then pressing unlock and lock on the fob or possibly vice versa! Thanks for all the input guys and will let you know how it goes in the next couple of days!
