Has anyone booked and gone away for Christmas in this country and if so would you recommend it?
After a particularly lousy Christmas this year we have decided to get away next year. I would like to book a lodge somewhere perhaps the Lake district or Scotland. It would be 2 of us plus the dog. Somewhere we could drive into a local town for a meal out and has plenty of nice walks to take the dog out.
Does anyone know of anywhere they could recommend?

We've stayed in plenty at all times of year including Christmas 4-5 years running and have usually gone to smaller companies.

I'm biased as this holiday let is just down the road from us but back in the days before we moved up here we stayed there regularly. The owners are lovely and the village (Askham) has two blindingly good pubs and a Michelin starred restaurant should you fancy poshing out as well as Lowther Castle, which has a fab cafe and wonderful gardens. There's plenty of fantastic walking direct from the village for you and the dogs (including Ullswater via Askham Fell and the fells above- Arthur's Pike, Loadpot Hill, etc) and you're only a few miles from Haweswater too.

During the year I go away for several weekends and obtain accommodation via airbnb, I find best to use Super Hosts.
Many years ago we used to hire a cruiser on the Norfolk Broads and one year decided to do something and hire Christmas week and not sure how we would go on. We had a great time, so you go and enjoy something different.
