Why iPhone 16 won’t charge using this cable but iPhone 17 will?

Hi all

looking for a bit of advice on charging iPhones please. 

So, we are a family of 4 people. We are sat in an Airport and I decide to plug my USB C cable into the charging table and the other end of that USB C cable into my iPhone 17. All is good. Later, my wife uses this same USB C - USB C to charge her iPhone 17. Again, all good. So, now my son wants to use this same USB C - USB C  cable for his IPHONE 16, but strangely, his iPhone 16 doesn’t charge. We also test the cable on my daughter’s iPhone 16 and again it doesn’t work. So, we then try both iPhone 16 phones with that same cable but plugged into the wall socket. They both now charge fine. 

What’s going on here? Why will the 2 iPhone 17’s charge from the USB C - USB C cable plugged into the airport charging table but the iPhone 16 phones won’t? As I said, both 16’s work using this same cable plugged into the wall.

According to google: 

Verify the power source compatibility:

• The iPhone 16 works best with power sources that support USB Power Delivery (USB PD), typically 20W or greater.
• A legacy 5V/2.4A power source, especially one with a fixed USB-C output, may not correctly negotiate power with the iPhone via a C-to-C connection, resulting in no charge or very slow charging.

Maybe the iPhone 17 has different compatibility...
