Nope, ECU doesn't need a learning period for a new battery. I don't know what you mean about a "learning period" for new injectors either. You code the injectors to each cylinder they're fitted to, to let the ECU know of the physical characteristics of each individual injector, then that's it. There's "reset oxygen sensor adaptions" but that's a different thing again.

I imagine it stalled because the ECU shut off the fuel flow to the faulty injector as a safety measure, rendering the engine down on power and you either stalled it or it was revving too low to avoid the stall.

I didn't mean to say the ecu needs a learning period for the battery more that the ecu maybe took a bit of a dump & lost some info with regards to timing etc , the new stable 12v supply should allow the ecu to re analyze the engine management.  I may be over thinking this :)

    A quick update .
Left the battery disconnected over night , started it up this morning ( very lively)  & ran on tickover for 10 mins before blipping the throttle, the knocking has gone for the time being so it seems, will take it or a spin later .

I agree & think this is the reason for the stall , while not related to the dead battery it shared a common link,  the -4 temp .
The car still had at least  50% summer diesel fuel in the tank , now the temprature has come up a bit & i've put some more fresh winter deisel in the tank the car is almost back to normal.
I have never paid any attention to the winter diesel change over on the 15th Nov each year maybe because all our old cars were more basic technology or were just lucky, we only do low mileage so i must remember for next winter.
