Thanks all and yes well North of the line in S Scotland
That will be the Arqiva Long Range Radio network then.
An antenna can be fitted to pull in weaker signals, there are different types available, ask your energy supplier what they have available.
Note even if you could get hold of one trying to fit it yourself would trigger the meters tamper alarm.
Interestingly some parts of Scotland, in particular Shetland, do have permission now to use 4G Mobile Phone communications hubs in certain circumstances if/when there is insufficient LRR coverage.
It is limited who can have them though, mainly its for those who had RTS meters which had to be replaced, and not all energy suppliers can offer 4G coms hubs yet.
And just in case someone asks - No, you can't connect smart meters over the internet. That would be a potential security risk for what is critical infrastructure.
    Here's some more information:
General about smart meter communications: https://www.smartme.co.uk/smets-2
See the section titled "Communication Workarounds".
More specific about the Northern Network communications problems and now being able to fit 4G coms hubs for some customers in Scotland:

That was started 4 years ago, but see the later posts from 5 months ago; in particular this from a senior engineer at OVO who was up in Scotland fitting meters during the RTS meter changeover.
