Registered keeper and owner not same on insurance document
I've just received my insurance documents after renewing with the AA. They have me as the registered keeper and my wife as the owner. I am the keeper, but as with everything in the household, the car is - presumably - jointly owned. Might this be an issue, particularly if I have to make a claim?

I can't recall an insurance application ever allowing anything other than specifying a single owner, so I can't see how this would ever be a problem where the policy is for a husband/wife and in reality it is owned by both of you.
Is the car owned outright, or does it have any PCP/HP?
But, the registered keeper and main driver are more important on the policy.
The only impact I can think of is in the case of a write-off and payout, the monies would belong to your wife in the eyes of the insurers.
If it sits better to have you as both the keeper and owner, I'd maybe change it at next renewal, but would not be paying a fee now to do that. If you are in a cooling off period, you could perhaps cancel but risk a different premium.1 -
Whose name is on the invoice for the car? There is normally no other proof of ownership.1

I would say the owner would be the person that purchase the car and the keep is the person whose name the car is registered against on the V5. Exceptions would things like hire purchase, in which case the technical owner is the hp company. This is not an issue for the insurance company and I have never been asked about ownership after an accident.1

Who's name is on the V5?HarryIb said:I've just received my insurance documents after renewing with the AA. They have me as the registered keeper and my wife as the owner. While V5 states not "Proof of Ownership" That person names on V5 is the "Registered Keeper" & that is the details that Ins are asking for..Life in the slow lane1 -
No, the insurers normally ask for both reg keeper AND owner. But they're generally happy if those are different but husband and wife.born_again said:

I don't see that it matters.
The registered keeper on the V5 is not necessarily the owner, and equally vice versa.
Like everything else in life, a car can be owned jointly by more than one person.
If you want to make sure it's not a problem, why not do what any sensible person would do? 'Phone the insurance company and ask them if it's an issue1 -
Just been through mine & it just asksCar_54 said:

Is the driver (or will they be) the registered keeper of this car?If your name appears in the car’s log book (V5 registration document) you will be the registered keeper.

No issue at all.HarryIb said:I've just received my insurance documents after renewing with the AA. They have me as the registered keeper and my wife as the owner. You are indeed the actual legal owner - albeit jointly, as with most household assets - and not a financier of some flavour, which is the thing they need to know for any payout.1 -
Thanks for all the responses. I'm the registered keeper on the V5, and we own the car outright and have always done so. From what's said above, it seems as though there's no issue. I'll update the details, or at least ask if it matters, at the next renewal.0
