Fence / Shed paint spraying

This really needs to be a priority for next year after letting it go this year & the garden is in such a way now that if it's brush on then it'll probably not get done again so I'm looking at a sprayer but know nothing about them.

Until now I've basically just been using the Ducksback brush on stuff & happy enough with it.

I've seen those hand pump sprayers as well as the electric type sprayers. Not really sure if either of them are poor or not.

I see there's Ducksback sprayable but I've also read before that you can make normal Ducksback sprayable by watering it down (not sure by how much). Although there's not a lot left in our tub so probably not worth it. Just enough for touch ups really.

And I'd be wanting to stay the same colour too for easiness.

Just looking for feedback on it really from others who've done it. Why this sprayer instead of that sprayer, advice on paint used, how to work with it, any tips/tricks kind of thing.

Because without asking I'll just buy some paint, stick it in a pump sprayer, give it some pumps & a squirt & then maybe be on here asking why it's not working.

  • I tried spraying once with a cheap airless sprayer from Screwfix but decided afterwards that it hadn’t been worth the bother.

If there’s a breath of breeze the stuff drifts onto surrounding surfaces which means time spent masking and lots of dust sheets. Combine that with the time spent afterwards cleaning up the sprayer and it took just as long as using a brush.

The OP has raised the point so knows that not all fence treatments can be used in sprayers.  That information is not always on the containers.  My neighbour hit the problem with his sprayer clogging up and it was only when he looked on the internet that he discovered the stuff he was using wasn't suitable for a sprayer.  I thought he must have missed the information on the container, but I had the same stuff and there was definitely nothing.

If the fence is old, there's likelihood of missing knot holes in the wood, plus gaps between the wood. These will allow paint through to your neighbours side. What's behind your fence that could be damaged by the spray?

We hand painted our fence this year with brushes. It was last done in 2020 during Covid, for the first time in probably many years, if ever. It took far less time this year than previously with a partial coat remaining from the previous painting.

    Their garden.

We own the fence. It's our divide & the deeds say that it's ours & so we paid to have it put in.

The neighbour has semi recently actually sprayed their side. Not once did they ask - are you ok with this (we would've been).
Not once did they check in with us about overspray or colour leaking through - they HAVE sprayed a different colour and it HAS leaked through.

This is just a cheapo fence panel. They've attached a washing line from the far end of their garden to one of our panels. Again, not once did they ask if this was ok. Whether this is generally done or not, I don't know.

Other things like we've had our washing out in the past & they'll start up a BBQ right next to the divide. Not once have they ever knocked on the door & said look we're going to have a BBQ in a few hours, just giving you a heads up because we see your washing out.

So just bear that in mind when suggesting I should be considerate of my neighbour.

I would brush it but my wife has that much stuff blocking access to things that I simply cannot be bothered if I'm totally honest, which is why it didn't get done this year. I did bits of what I could easy access as touch ups but I couldn't be bothered moving so much stuff.

Huge plant pots, as in whopping plastic tubs with trees in them, not just pick up with 1 hand type things.

The side of the shed never got done because there's just plants, planters & just STUFF all over the side of it.

    Hence me looking at spraying.

    Read my above response.

And that's only part of it. I never got on to their 2am-3am karaoke sessions & how the worst place to be in for noise travel is our bedroom, even worse than the joining living room but then at 2am-3am that's exactly where you're going to be.

It'll probably surprise you from my time on here but I'm actually quite considerate of others. I just don't want the hassle & confrontation.
But when people just couldn't care less then neither can I.
