Have you looked into Skechers? They do walking boots / waterproof footwear.

I had a pair of Skechers trainers, not walking specific just general trainers, I found they gave very little support and wore out the sole quickly and that was at a time I wasn't walking much at all so that's put me off them

I have a pair of Hi-Tec walking boots which I found in a sale for £30 but which have lasted surprisingly well (about 6 years so far).
I can recommend Merrell too though, and my wife uses Meindl, which are superb, but then they should be!

I've had a pair of Salomon walking shoes for around 13 years. OH has North Face walking shoes, he does a lot of walking and rates them.

Looking at reviews I've come to the conclusion brands that were highly rated in the past may be not so good today so your 5/10/15 year old shoes made by a particular company were probably better made than their latest offerings are .

My wife has recently purchased a pair of Merrell waterproof walking trainers, cost £140 from JL.  The thing that she liked about JL was the smaller range of stocked products making choice somewhat easier and a more relaxed environment than the Go Outdoors / Sports Direct stores.

I would also say that, in today's prices, £40 for any pair of shoes is rather towards the budget end.

I've had a pair of Berghaus walking boots, their cheaper style, and I reckon I've easily had over 10 years wear from them so far. This year they've started letting water in so have reproofed them and see how well that lasts. Sole still in good condition.
My experience of mountain warehouse and other similar price range ones are that they aren't built to last.

I have Merrell hiking shoes which are 9 years old. They do around 3 to 4 miles a day over mainly fields and tracks, some tarmac but nothing exceptionally rugged.  They are just about worn out now and I've bought another pair of Merrell  MOAb GTX  to replace them.  Wonderfully comfortable from day 1.

They arrived, fit fine,Quechua mh100 is what I went for, cheap and cheerful :)
Incidentally I did go to Go Outdoors, wanted to try on some Merrells but couldn't find a member of staff to serve me so their loss was Decathlons gain.
