Over flowing toilet

My relative toilet overflows after flushing, for a few minutes. I took the top off and looked inside.
The black plastic part that goes down when flushed but then gradually returns to the top, is leaning and sticking a little on the side.
What is meant to keep this part upright

Nothing except the shaft. It may be worth cleaning  those parts to see if it then slips easily up and down but if it is old then often a replacement is best ( and one with a brass connector is my preferrence)

Can you post a picture?  There are different types of fill valve and flushing mechanism and the answer to your question depends on what is in this particular cistern.

Rather than a replacement it could be a simple adjustment...

It's one of these new style slim, low water use toilets; my toilet is the old ceramic pot, much easier to work on.

If you lift the grey collar half way down, you should be able to twist the valve slightly. Then push it back down.
The thin black rod is to adjust the water level l

oh and turn the water off before attempting

Is it possible to gently twist the mechanism that is sticking round slightly so that it no longer catches on the side?

    You could But
    1- it’ll spring back
2- there’s a chance that if you turn it to much, the connecting nut underneath might loosen, causing a slight leak.

You edited it too late. What's the best way to deal with a bulging ceiling below?
