TfL Autopay vehicle already registered by others

Hi all - will jump straight to it, I assume it's a common issue people encounter but I haven't seen much mentions.

I have a second hand car and have kept the car reg unchanged. Couple of days ago I knew I had to go through one of the toll tunnels in London, so tried setting up an Autopay account on TfL. All set up, until I get to the bit where I link my car reg to my account, of which the system says, it's already been registered. Fair enough - looks like the previous owner has forgotten to take it off.

Fast forward to yesterday (26th Dec, a Bank Holiday) when I have actually driven past Silvertown. I've logged in to my TfL account last night, verified that I could not set up Autopay, but then realised the system also allows me to pay for the crossing separately (charging the normal £4 rate of course).

So - there's no way I could have alerted the previous owner (who i dont know - I've bought via a dealership), and the system would have charged them anyway. If I then panic and decide to pay the toll myself, then TfL would have been (gladly) paid twice, plus I would be disadvantaged by not having access to the discounted Autopay rate as I would not have been able to pre-register.

What should I do? Should I just leave it (as a reminder for the previous owner + not double pay TfL), or raise it (which would take TfL weeks to respond especially during holiday seasons), or something else? Definitely not double paying them.

PS I have taken a screenshot of my account unable to add my car, in case they raise it.

Many thanks!!

Linking a car to your account does not actually enable autopay, so the previous owner might not pay the toll, and when TFL eventually ask DVLA to snitch they will get your address to send the huge "fine" to.

No idea what to do, I'd pay manually (as £4 is massively cheaper than their "fine") and get onto TFL about adding it to the account.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I had to contact Tfl about an error regarding my car registration and they sorted it out very quickly. Put the ball into their court asap.
  • Why would you be double-paying, if you manually paid the fee?
