about having a dashcam fitted. Older driver, I go along at reasonable speed (don't get in the way, always alert and looking for any other vehicles that could pose a problem. Coming to the conclusion that it's not worth fitting one as I have to remove it to prevent theft when I leave the car so no park footage. Plus the responsibility of providing footage if necessary. It all seems a bit of a waste of time. Views welcome. PS may not be the best place to post where most would be pro Dashcam!  :'(

OP hasn't heard of crash-for-cash perhaps?

If "it all seems a bit of a waste of time" to you then it's probably not worth bothering. I have a front/rear dealer fit system in my car, both for my own protection (not needed yet fortunately) but also to record what others do. I've sent in a couple of reports to the police, one showing a speeding driver with no lights who shortly afterwards collided with another vehicle, although I didn't capture that myself, and one where a driver overtook me to go through a red light that I'd already stopped for. I don't know if either has resulted in any action but if it helps to take scum drivers off the road it seems like a good investment to me.

We are careful drivers didn’t stop someone crossing into our lane and ripping off a £300 wing mirror. When I showed their firm they paid without question. So it paid for itself.

My husband encountered a car overtaking round a corner and heading straight for him.

A head on collision was only avoided by him mounting the verge at the side of the road.

That day he went and bought a dash cam.

A few months later, The dash cam recorded an elderly driver driving at 30 miles an hour along the middle of the road. When traffic came the other way he drove into the side of the road and stopped, only to proceed back to the middle of the road and 30 miles an hour.

A police visit found out he was on a cocktail of drugs that caused dizziness, but when he told his doctor the doctor just changed one of the tablets.

He gave up his licence voluntarily, on police advice.

Our used car came with a fully fitted Nextbase system front and back. Very discreet, however downloading any of the footage is a task I have failed to master.
  • All the examples given above as to why a dashcam is a good idea cite the appalling driving of others and how the video evidence is useful for proving blamelessness in the case of an accident or just to submit to one of the "Grass Up A Dodgy Driver" services.

I don't want a dashcam because I am certain that I am a dreadful driver (by definition half of drivers are worse than average although 80% claim to be better). Don't think I'm unsafe but I bet I !!!!!! a lot of other motorists.

When the inevitable wang happens I don't want the extra evidence against me coming from my own kit.

Maybe you should consider giving up driving if you're that certain there will be an incident that is your fault.

Sounds similar to the one that I had fitted to my car (Toyota), downloading is a bit of a faff and I usually need to check the instructions before starting to do it, and then it's a bit tricky to get the video from my phone to my computer, but it is possible. It was a lot easier with previous dashcams that I could remove from the car and either connect directly to my computer or pop out the SD card to be read by the computer.
