Hi all,

After some advice please. My current laptop is dead. It powers up but by the time I put my passcode in, it freezes. Sometimes it works for a minute or two, other times it just freezes right away.

A week or two ago, there was a flashing light where the power socket is. I did a quick google which showed a video and said the battery is not working properly but it was far too technical for me - the guy was opening it up and doing things!

I have some work files on which I need to transfer to my new laptop. Is there a way of doing this or would I need to get a new battery and have it fitted to access them?

I actually got a new laptop (Lenovo Yoga Slim x) about a month ago but stupidly kept using the old one which is now dead. Boohoo.

Thanks to anyone who can help. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays x

A dead battery wouldn't normally cause freezing; most laptops will run quite happily without a battery installed at all.
You should be able to recover the files but it might mean removing the SSD from the old laptop, placing it in a USB enclosure and connecting it to the new one.
This isn't especially difficult but is a similar difficulty level to replacing the battery. If you aren't confident with a battery replacement, I'm not sure I should be encouraging you to remove the SSD!

A dead laptop battery does not cause a laptop to freeze.
This is more likely a Windows/software issue or a hardware issue.

Re: flashing light this may be a charger issue.  Or a battery issue.
If you've got a multimeter or can borrow one you can see what voltage is coming out of the charger.  If its not what the laptop is expecting, well there's your problem.

The SSD is shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=RX7zVQ4yCHs

Skip past the battery removal. He will show the SSD and the caddy needed to retrieve any data.

Though you might not need to do so. Instead, turn off the device by pressing the Power button for at least fifteen seconds or pressing it three times. Then...

    1. Locate the Novo button. It is a small, circular button, usually on the side or near the power button, that you may need to press with the tip of an unfolded paperclip or a similar sharp object.
    2. Press the Novo button to power on the PC and access the Novo Button Menu.
    3. Use your arrow keys to select System Recovery or One Key Recovery and press Enter. This will boot the system into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
    4. On the "Choose an option" screen, select Troubleshoot.
    5. Select Advanced options.
    6. Select Startup Settings.
    7. Select Restart.
    8. After the PC restarts, a list of options will appear. To enter Safe Mode, you have three options:
      • Press 4 or F4 for basic Safe Mode.
      • Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking (recommended for internet access).
      • Press 6 or F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
After selecting your desired option, the computer will boot into Safe Mode.

You can insert a USB drive for the purpose of copying off your files.

To exit Safe Mode, simply restart or turn off your computer normally.

So I tried the laptop again this morning and it worked, and didn't freeze. I managed to transfer everything onto a USB so all good.

What do I do with the laptop now? Shove it on eBay as parts only? If someone knew what they were doing, I am sure they could get it to work again by replacing something or the other, but not something I can guarantee.

    Thanks for all your help,

Ebay should get £200–£250 for 'parts or not working' but you'll need to be sure to erase documents off the storage

Sorry me again. I switched to the new laptop and thought let me factory reset the old one and put it onto eBay. It does not switch on at all, even when on charge. The "num lock" button has a light on but nothing else.

Is there a way to factory reset it or is a no no now? I did try looking on Google and YouTube and people have said drain the battery, shove it on charge and it should at least switch on. I am waiting for the battery to drain.

First, worst case if you cannot get it to boot, remove the SSD before it goes on eBay. See BFBW's youtube link.
If you can get it to boot into windows you can factory reset it in there.
If it runs, or sounds like it runs, but doesn't go into windows, try and get it to boot from a boot disk by pressing F12.
