Salty living room wall?

Noticed what looks like salty deposits on our living room wall near the window. It's literally the only place in the whole of the living room that has this.

More info...

Our living room is a damp area. 2015 we had this treated. The walls were taken back to brick, Soverign products were used. Chemical washes, tanking slurry coated this way & that way over a couple days, new floor joists, new flooring.

Somewhere around this time we also had a new living room window installed. I can't remember if before or after the tanking but I'm going to say after (could be wrong). By new window I mean complete new window, as the old one was leaking. New frame, new glass.

And all was well in the world.

Until very recently.

It wasn't there at the start of the year & wasn't there in summer. No idea when it came but it was noticed this week.

As you can see, it runs up where the skim bead will be & then weirdly there's a couple patches in between this & the window itself.

Why? Why now?
And what to do with it?

    Solution?

I turned the heating down but this was only about 2 weeks ago & only by 1c & only for after work times. So from 6pm-9pm instead of it being set to 16c I've set it to 15c to see whether it's too cold or we can settle at that. No idea how much money that will save me, whether I'm looking at pence or a decent amount over time.

And I'm throwing that out there simply because you said cold & I've made a cold adjustment, no other reason.

So, solution? Or is the only solution really to be to stick the heating on more?

    Plumb is right.
I've had it in 2 houses. One in a kitchen window where a new one was put in and the effect was directly along the metal edging.
I rubbed it down, let it dry out and re did then painted.
    Single glazed and unheated
Needed doing every now and again.

Second, both kitchen window and ensuite window. I just rub it down and repaint.
Took a couple of goes over a couple of years. Fine now.
Accidental but the ensuite one is fine . I had to remove failing filler in window frame and replace. No more problem.
    Double glazed and heated.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • I wonder if an oil based primer or a specialist paint might help. Not something I’ve dealt with but if I have a query on paints the decorator’s section of the Screwfix forum is very helpful.

Check there’s no drafts coming from the window frame
if it was me for a long term solution, I’d remove the plaster and fit insulated plasterboard and use a plastic corner bead trim.

but they do sell a insulated type wallpaper ( silver colour) that you glue on the wall. But then you’d have to wallpaper on top of it.
