Polymer coating
I’m buying a new car, and have been offered polymer coating for £400. This includes some interior treatment as well. Is this something worth paying for?
The car is £24k by the way, and it has a metallic paint finish.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

No. Buy yourself or find a local detailer that can apply coating for half / quarter of the costGDB2222 said:I’m buying a new car, and have been offered polymer coating for £400. Two people saying exactly the same thing! Maybe, the mods could close the threads before somebody disagrees, and I get confused?
Thanks for the quick response. I'll let the dealer know.

You can get kits to do it yourself for probably less than £80. It's best to look up what professinoal grade stuff costs and then see if you're willing to wax on, wax off yourself, or if you want to pay hundreds for someone else to do it. Same goes for the interior. You may find that local garages won't entertain doing the work, so you'll need to go to a bodywork or specialist car detailing place, who again will charge a lot. But it's really only a coating that's applied by hand. It doesn't last forever either, and will wash off in time, even quicker if you use car shampoos etc0

It depends on the product they plan on using and who is applying it.
One major dealer of prestigious German vehicles in my area offers ceramic coatings and they contract a local detailing firm to do it with some stunning results.
However, if it is just one of the dealer valeting staff applying it I wouldn't bother.0 -
A ceramic coating applied (after correct preparation) by a reputable detailer would be worth it.The stuff you’re being offered by the dealer won’t be.0

Anything a dealer tries hard to sell you once you have agreed to purchase the car will be because of the very high margins they will make on it which they hope to use to offset the tighter margins on the car itself.
When I bought my last new car I had a car dealer offer me a £500 coating that he repeatedly stated that they "made zero profit on" to close the deal, so once we were almost ready to shake on it, I said, oh, and don't bother with the coating and just drop the price by £500 as you're making no profit anyway. I'll save money, you guys will save some workshop time."
I've never seen a salesman backpedal so fast in my life!

My new car (a year ago) was discounted without haggling by £4K, the windscreen price was £32K. The dealer then sneaked in "free" alloy/tyre insurance for 3 years, paintwork/upholstery protection and two services... However these "free" extras were added to the price before the £4K discount, so they were not free at all.As vacheron mentioned, beware of offers!Incidentally, paintwork/upholstery treatments have added nothing to the resale value of the cars I've had in the past, consider it money down the drain.0

Two bucket wash, clay mitt and some decent wax and you're good to go.
Pennies by comparison.
Funnily, i've been pondering a small Caddy sized van to facilitate a side project i'm going to work on. I havent seen much movement yet, but in theory markets like pickups and vans are likely to be hit by the upcoming downturn.Would be interesting to hear if anyone has direct experience? Why? So you can argue with them?0
