Getting a euro lock to fit with weird measurements

So our locks were perfectly fine when we had them fitted after moving in.
Then last year or whenever it was, the handles needed replacing, the new handles have a thicker/deeper back plate which now means the external portion of the euro lock sits INSIDE the handle back plate.

Not a safety issue I suppose but it looks crap & annoys me.

I've looked on various upvc parts websites & found nothing so thinking I must be being blind I contacted about 4 websites with my measurements & the 8mm backplate requirement.

1 chose not to respond (great service!) and the other 3 said they don't do anything that suits.

So I wondered about a new lock.

Got the tape measure, measured to where I was eyeballing the flush part of the back plate, made use of Amazon's handy returns procedure & got myself a new lock ordered.

35mm internal, 60mm external.

Except when fitted the internal now certainly is - it sits INSIDE the backplate by 3mm. The external is sticking out beyond the backplate by about 6mm.

And 38mm x 54mm doesn't seem to exist.

End product I want to be looking at a thumb turn ABS lock which is Pre set/coded to the keys we already have, so I'm using this exercise to get things right.

Any ideas?

If it has to be a new handle then so be it I suppose. So long as it's not the same price as the lock is going to be.

  • 38/54 is unrealistic requirement. You have to settle for 40/55. Not sure why you want "Pre set/coded to the keys your already have".

Indeed its pretty normal to size up, a few mm sticking out of the handle on the inside even with the thumb turn version of the ABS is ok.

You really want to limit any protrusion on the outside as much as possible even with a 3* lock but you don't want it recessed as that will invite water in to the handle.

Don't overpay for the keyed from code locks. check vendors on ebay. They typically take several days to get assembled, longer this time of year. I've had lots done over the years.

To both of you - what will be cheaper?

    * to get a new thumb turn lock & then get the additional keys cut that I currently have for the existing lock. There's more than just my wife and I with keys BTW & even then we have an additional spare between us as well.

    * to get the lock coded to the keys already in play so it's just a case of putting the lock in the door & nobody then needs a key update.

JCP do an abs avocet quantum thumb turn keyed to code for £63 delivered. You could check Barnsley locks too. Both have sites and sell on eBay.

They sell keys to code as well. I assume you have the key card and it's Avocet/quantum we are talking about - master lock prices vary.

You'll have to work out what's cheapest based on the number of keys.

You can sometimes buy locks in the right length at a discount on eBay and that's what might swing it one way or another, but those are just with new codes and subject to someone selling what you need.

Rember there are two finishes too - brass and chrome.

I think a new cylinder will come with at least three keys.
BnQ machines: "The 3 for 2 promotion applies to any three keys cut in the same transaction for £14.00." Not sure if they cut this particular sort of keys.
There are machines in Screwfix too. The cost is likely to be the same or lower.
  • You had a similar problem here is it the same door?

Yes it's the Avocet ones. I actually bought all the locks from Barnsley locks tbh. I got the later keys from an eBay seller for about £7.

I'll take a look at eBay for the locks and tally up what's the cheapest way at it.

I'd be surprised if B&Q did these kinds of keys. I know places like Timpsons don't. I had to get them done to code either direct from the websites at a premium (think my sister paid up £50 because she wasn't aware of them being done on eBay) or eBay for £7.

In that thread I was looking to get a door handle suitable for the lock.

As you'll have seen me say in this thread though - I've contacted websites & god knows how my door came with the handle it did because it seems they don't exist. Or at least don't exist now.

In this thread I'm looking to get a lock for the door handle as I've now accepted that I can't get a door handle to suit the lock.

If you're coming from the angle of I should've just posted back in that thread then no, because people don't read & I don't want to wade through 10 posts of the original question being answered before I finally get to one where the current question is answered.

If you're not coming from that angle then apologies. There's just that many people bang on about upping threads & keeping to one thread like it's seriously paining them or something as though it's impossible for them to simply scroll past something they don't like, when creating a new thread is sometimes just a better way of dealing with it & keeping things cleaner.

Ordered in a tester thumb turn with the bolded measurements from Amazon. I'll be sending it back anyway, I just ordered to see if the size worked.

Actually works very well. Fits flush on the outside.

Just need to get one of the Avocet ones ordered now & get a thumb turn guard bought & installed for peace of mind & then it's job done.
