Amazon: no drop off an option. Collection only???

Never had this before. Any idea why this would be the case?

I'm returning an item, ready to drop it off at the post office & then I get hit with a select your collection date - being the only option. And of course the collection has you chained to the house because the timeframe is ridiculously open. Something like 7am - 6pm or whatever it is.

I just want to drop it off at the post office which is literally round the corner so that I can go out of the house if I want & not be chained to it.

The item isn't even heavy either. It's very small, you could fit it in your pocket kind of small.

Is the item considered 'dangerous'?  Items such as perfume and batteries might come under that heading.

I just had the same, it was a faulty Ring doorbell battery. I assumed it was because it was a battery. I was told I could pay to return it myself and if I sent a copy of my postage receipt they would refund me up to a certain level.

Ah you're probably on to something there now you mention it.

It's a car key fob (to transfer the internals from an old manky key fob). There's more than 1 sort & they sent the wrong one but there's a CR2032 battery with it & the health & safety powers that be are probably concerned about it levelling a city or something.
  • A Royal Mail collection should be the normal time your postie comes.  Amazon don't know what that is so they have to say the whole day, but you probably know roughly when they usually get to you, give or take a couple of hours.  (I do understand the annoyance of having to wait around though.)

    That's a gamble tbh.

Yes we do have a 'normal time' for the postie, just like we have a 'normal time' for the Amazon guy - 99% of the time it's between 3pm-4pm.

But the other week I gambled. There was nobody in in the morning & I thought well their normal time is 3pm-4pm so even with someone getting back at 12pm-1pm that's still 2 hours before they usually turn up.

10:30am they're picked up on the Tapo doorbell.

Never ever ever happens. Except it did the day I gambled.

    Oh wow!

I have to say we have had the occasional odd time recently, now I think of it - I had a parcel delivered on a Sunday afternoon (we have NEVER had post on a Sunday) and one weekday we had the post arrive at the usual time around lunchtime, then a parcel delivered a few hours later.

I had forgotten about those instances when making my previous comment.

Also, I recently had an Amazon return collected by RM and for a couple of days it said the collection had failed!  But after that updated to say the item was in the postal system and they issued a refund.  So, just mentioning in case that happens for you, you might not have to worry about it.

In the end I contacted Amazon & told them it was incredibly inconvenient & asked if there's an alternative way I can get the item returned.

They said don't worry about it & refunded me anyway.
