Car insurance

My car insurance runs out this month and as usual I have used a comparison tool 21days prior to my insurance expiring for a list of quotes. For the last 6 years I have been driving I have done quotes and then nearer the time picked the best one to start a new policy. However, this time when clicking on my quotes with a new provider the policy cost is increasing by £300. Please can anyone confirm if they have had this experience or should quotes be valid for 30days as they have previously been.

Thank you

Different companies are different, it does seem that those selling via aggregators have been shortening the quote validity period compared to many years ago but most maintain a longer period for those applying directly. The aggregator is normally fairly clear how long the quote is available for, some can be as little as that day.

My car insurance continues to drop in price
I currently pay £120 - with £40 cash back (Quidco) - I have never (in over 40 years of driving) paid over £300 for comprehensive cover !

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

That isn’t the answer to OP’s question.

They didn’t ask what do others pay and what is the highest you have paid during the past 40 years.

As said, some have expiry periods and it’s often stated on the page.

Whenever I’ve returned to saved quotes, I’ve rarely seen them remain the same. They don’t always go up and some do drop.

Also worth doing comparisons through the cashback sites as you’ll get £30-£40 on car insurance.

That's happened to me over the last couple of years or so, so now I usually click through to the providers I'm interested in straight after doing the quotes. There's then usually the option to save the quote with that individual provider for around 30 days. The downside is that you usually have to create an account with each of them in order to save it.

You’re not alone; a lot of people are seeing this now. Quotes aren’t guaranteed for 30 days anymore; many insurers re-price daily based on risk and demand. If you don’t buy straight away, the price can jump when you click back later. The best option is to lock in the cheapest quote as soon as you’re happy with it, or try again at a slightly different start date.
  • Our house insurance is with Churchill, the renewal quotation was £80 more than last year. Checking on comparison sites, we couldn’t get close to that renewal quote, even Churchill were about £100 more for identical cover via comparison sites.
It’s bizarre, as normally switching results in a better deal with cash back or discounted meals, etc. Maybe those times are over?

New customer discounts have been banned for a couple of years now but it will still depend on where we are in the cycle of the market and who's doing strategic plays for market share etc plus how you align to the flavour of the month.
