Tax on redundancy

If you've only earned 15k gross and put 17k into your pension, then there's a good chance you've gone over the limit. Is that 9k what you've paid or, or does it also include any tax relief (that will depend on how pension was funded). Its the gross investment that counts, including tax relief, not what you personally added. I'd calculate exactly what you can pay in before committing to the £8. If you post exact figures, someone here might be able to help you work it out.

The 17k figure is if I add the 8k redundancy, existing 9k is salary sacrifice, so gross. Looks like I can either reduce the 8k figure from my redundancy, in which case I'll pay tax on the remainder of the 8k, or pay in the 8k and make sure I earn at least another 2k this fy

Just found out that as I have been contributing to my pension via salary sacrifice it is classed as employer contribution, not employee contribution. So don't need to worry about the earnings limit as that is based on employee contributions!
