Curve - keeps getting declined

I got an email from Curve saying my account will be shut down if I don't use it in the next 14 days.

On app opening I had to do ID verification. This was 2 days ago.

So I saw 2 expired cards & as I couldn't figure out how to update them I just added the main cards replacement details - Chase, so copy & pasting the number from the app (so no chance of inputting incorrect number).

I've used it twice now. The second time the person with the beeper device told me it had declined. On checking Curve it had also declined on the first attempt at another place so I'm not sure why they didn't tell me this. Looks like I've not paid for what I had.

I had to switch and use Google Pay in the second instance (I was trying this second attempt via Samsung Pay / Samsung Pay + which has my Curve account connected).

So how to get it working?

  • I've had the same email.

As the cards you had linked had expired (as, no doubt, mine will be too) you haven't used Curve for some considerable time. What reason(s) did you have for re-activating it?

I seem to remember something to do with using Barclays cards with Google Pay and maybe a generous short-lived cashback deal but nothing I've seen in their current proffer makes me want to rush to re-ID etc.

Have I missed some useful/lucrative functionality?

Correct I hadn't used it in a while. Only because I switched to using Google Pay rather than Samsung Pay that's all. This was because Texaco don't support Samsung Pay but do support Google Pay & it's currently the cheapest of the big 3 around here so is where I fill up.

Wasn't aware I had to 're-activate' it. Just thought I had to use it & it was already activated. Unless you mean submit new ID.

The reason I was looking at having it not close was just because I like options being kept open.
Plus I forget what it is now but when I joined Curve there was something you could have on the free account which you can't have now, they changed it for new customers. I'd need to go digging & see as I can't remember what it was - another reason why I'd rather just keep it open.

I wonder if it's got anything to do with my Curve being accessed/used via Samsung Pay+ & not directly to Curve, although that's actually the way it's always been used.

I expect it's more to do with the upcoming acquisition by Lloyds.

They seem to be pruning the user list, removing people they can't KYC, inactive etc.

Not officially disclosed but some reports say Lloyds have paid £120m for Curve, a business that has been losing £60m a year. I know that normal business logic doesn't apply to FinTechs but really?

They must have some sexy tech that Lloyds want to leverage, wonder what it is?

I think that new customers get a credit card rather than a debit card and in the app a virtual debit card is created if you want to use the Fronted feature.

Other than that all I can think of is that Curve limited the amount of linked cards you could have but if you had added loads of cards before a certain date, your cards would stay in the Curve wallet until they expired although you would not be able to add new cards until you removed enough old ones to be under the limit.

OK so my transactions were being declined because my actual Curve card has expired.

Then there was something about Samsung Pay+ being discontinued or whatever (can't go back to the chat to see what they said now so I'm going off my sieve of a memory) so I need to convert it fully to a Curve card/account.

Which I can't yet do as I'm away from home & don't have ID with me so my whole account & app is now in the state of requiring ID yet I can't provide it until I return home.
