HMRC

hello all
I have been. trying to renew/update HMRC account but I am having bad time time, they send me a sms to my iPhone but they only have my old number. I tried to phone them and gave up.
I tried scanning the chip on passport nothing happens, why can they not just supply an acsessible postal address. is it not us tax payers who fund this organiisation and pay their wages.
I read they will be going fully digital next year that sounds fun.
sorry for the rant but I had to vet my frustration.

It is not that they have an old number being their fault, it is that you failed to update your security details when you changed your number.

What do you mean by this, do you mean you tried to follow the reverification process, scanned your passport with your phone randomly, something else? What "does nothing", the app, the phone, the website after verifying in the app?

What do you mean by "an accessible postal address"? HMRC no longer accept the majority of documents in paper form because it costs a lot more and is slower to process.

Net taxpayers fund a lot of things, that is however of zero relevance in this situation. HMRC have processes to follow, rules and regulations to which they must adhere, if they had to change them because someone said "but I'm a taxpayer" then there would be total chaos.

They already nearly are and the last bits of legacy paperwork will be being phased out.

What are you actually trying to achieve, it sounds like you need to reset your security details having not updated your phone number for the 2FA login? Can you use one of your backup methods or have you also lost access to those as well?

If not then you need to use your passport or driving license via the app (GOV.UK One Login), the document must be current and valid to work and you need to check the app has the correct permissions on your device to work, it also does not work with most cases on the phone or any cover on the passport.

Write to HMRC at this address for PAYE and Income Tax queries.

There is a different way to:

You do not need to include a street name, city name or PO box when writing to this address.

Couriers should use a different address.

Which forms do they not accept?

Dear sheramber thank you for reply and a helpful one at that, most of the replies I get on here are or come a cross as lectures. I am nearly 80 and I have some issues  (eye sight)using I T, thanks again.

  • Best way is to make the call while you're doing something else, at a time when you can afford to leave it connected for the 1hr or so it might take them to answer.
I've had them answer after 55 minutes on hold before now, the calls do eventually go through.

Best to call at 08.00 on the dot. After a couple of minutes of the usual preamble, you get in the early morning queue which is normally shorter than usual. Typically the call should get answered in around 15 mins.
