Spending in mexico

So going to mexico for sons wedding (10 days) everything is pretty much all inclusive but there maybe a scenario where cash is needed. What would be my best option:- take some local peso or dollars, use a uk bank card i have chase kroo halifax santander, or obtain a prepaid card wise.
any advice appreciated.

  • Definitely worth taking some cash - pesos is the way to go. US dollars are accepted some places in tourist areas but it's not 100%.

    Dollars are widely accepted but at a poor exchange rate, there arent currency controls in Mexico so its not like some other countries where they are desperate for outside currencies, if someone wants dollars they can walk into the bank and get them. 

    Cards are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants etc but there isnt much use of things like Zettle or Square so most markets, taxis, food stalls etc are cash only.  A fee free card is ok in many places but cash is still required. Things like Uber are very dependent on where you are, it works well in Mexico City, in Oaxaca by comparison uber is officially "there" but its non-existent, the three families that run the local taxi firms have intimidated anyone setting themselves up, in 4 months there only twice did I ever see an uber registered vehicle on the map
