Thank you again for all your responses,
I came back to Liverpool after living in South Africa for 12 years and went into the Abbey National but although I had ID they needed proof of residence in the UK which I did not have, so my friend who was with me Michael McCarthy supplied his proof of address and I opened the account in his name and I remember it had two sections which asked name of account and underneath account holder and I opened the account and used it for many years, Michael sadly passed some time ago so I have no ID in his name.
The matter has come up in a Civil Court case and I allege that this account was not opened in a false name as the bank opened it when we were both there so need a copy of the bank application or even better someone who worked at the Abbey in the early 1990's, it may not sound viable and the Courts think that as I have explained it was a different era and women were only given a legal right to open a bank account until 1975 !!
    Would not happen now.

Only way would be if it opened for a minor.

There isn't a website for SAR as such, but the details of who to contact will be in the bank's published privacy policy, usually linked at the foot of each page.

In terms of the wider situation with the account opened in the name of a now-deceased friend, the account will presumably have been his as far as estate distribution was concerned - was there a will and were you in touch with the executor?

SAR would make no difference as account is not in your name/details. Add in acc holder is deceased.

According to data protection laws, personal data is information which relates to living people. Therefore, a person can’t make a subject access request to get information about someone who has died.

This is getting way beyond the scope of a forum. You need proper legal advice here.

It's sometimes possible to open an account in your name but state that the beneficiary of the account is someone else e.g., this is common with children's accounts where the account is opened in bare trust. Could this be what happened?

Your last point isn't quite right either but that's OT.

Your view that you did not  open an account in a false name differs from mine!

I would leave this well alone - I know you will not take any notice but the bank will not have any information anyway - which is a good thing for you.
