Leaving flat tenancy

Hi

I have recently just left the flat where I have been renting for a number of years. On the day of the check out the cleaners were delayed in completing the end of tenancy clean. I had booked the check out after their estimated finish time but they overrun. This meant that when I went to do the check out and hand the keys over to the agency, they still had an hour left to clean.

I met the agency and rather than wait for the cleaners to finish the clean and then let them lock up the door, they took one set of keys and left the other set with me whilst I waited for the cleaners to finish and then locked up and they suggested I send the keys via post.

I did this and sent keys via post (they are based the other side of the city) with a first class stamp in a cardboard backed envelope with some padding in it (but just put it in mailbox rather than a tracked service (seems a mistake now)). They are now saying 9 days later the keys haven’t arrived.

I am worried I may get charged for this. Any advice? Thanks.

Well yes if they don't turn up you almost definitely will, I would say that RM are **** at the best of times but as its December  I wouldn't give up yet.

As an aside, did you weigh and measure  the envelope, if a 1st class stamp didn't cover postage they may have refused receipt of it, worth contacting the sorting office given its local.
