I made a rhubarb last year, it was Barbie pink for a week! It finally made a really nice crisp dry white, but I used some of it for blending with other wines and they turned out ok.

exprog - usually one sachet of yeast, or one tsp if you buy a tub,
nutrient is bought by the tub, about £1 and you about 1 tsp per gallon and the water is to fill up to the shoulder of the demi initially and then topped up after a few days. Teabag wine is great for a nice quick drink and there are so many flavours to choose from.

    Thanks pol.

I don't think I've ever seen one of these homemade beer/wine recipes that give all the details. :) Seems to be a feature of the homebrew community!

Now that you've given those details this does seem too simple and good a recipe to ignore! Thanks.
  • I just thought I'd share with you that I have barrelled five gallons of Geordie Bitter yesterday which should be ready in about three to four weeks if I can wait that long.

"What are 'nutrients' and how much is needed?"

Nutrients that you see referred to in practically every wine and beer recipe known to mankind is simply a mixture of nutrients that help the yeast develope in your must (mixture of ingrediants) that you want to ferment.
The general rule is one teaspoon of yeast nutrient to one gallon of wine and roughly two and half times that in five gallons of beer.

As we are not allowed to advertise if any one would like a web link for a good on line stockist of all your brewing needs feel free to send me an email and I will responed with a link.
  • When you consider that there are 40 pints of bitter in 5 gallons, I would expect to pay around £2.30 or more across the bar, this is around £90.00. Not only are you lineing the pockets of the publican aswell as Gordon Brown's henchmen, run the risk of breaking the law should you be that way inclined, my out lay to make the beer is around £14.00, equates to 35p a pint. Yes there is an initial outlay on brewing equiptment and you do need to by such things like sugar yeast etc. but I know I'm quids in everytime.

I've been given a gigantic marrow (it's as long as my arm and scares the cat!) and as I'm the only one who eats marrow, I've decided to make wine with it. I've got an old book called Drink Your Own Garden and there's a recipe in there. Going to get it started today.

LOL at the marrow scaring the cat - I have cats that are scared of their own shadows, so a marrow would terrify them!

I am going to rack my blackberry today, so hopefully it will go well. And I have herbal teabags to start a teabag wine going - might start that today too.

OMG just racked the blackberry and caught a quick taste of it and it is flipping gorgeous! That's without being left to mature. Wow!

I'm off out again tomorrow for more blackberries to make another gallon... this stuff is good!

I'll have to give blackberry a go when they ripen up around here.

I've started on the marrow. The thing weighed almost 9lbs! So I've still got a load left to freeze!
