Hi - Hearing today how much the power prices are going up  I'm sure I won't be the only one thinking about starting this. Would welcome some advice about how to get started. What do you think I need for the basics?
Thanks

We've just decided to start homebrewing and I've bought a few kits to start things off but they are really expensive so I want to start moving into wine/beer making from scratch.Has anyone got any good recipes that they can share?I can google wine recipes but unless they've been tried you never know how they'll turn out

Hi, there  There was a recent question on this subject with links to useful threads. I'll add your question to that to keep ideas together.

This thread may help you. I've only ever made homebrew from kits but am seriously thinking of trying from scratch after reading this thread, maybe just buy the flavourings as the peach schnapps & such like have always gone down a storm when I've made them before.
Good luck & let us know if you give it a tryYou cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0 -
I went down the beer from scratch route, but I found it was just too much palaver for me, so went back to kits
Wine I mostly did from scratch, elderflower etc and found this was fairly easyGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0 -
Well the white is almost ready, it`s almost perfectly clear without adding any finings.:j
I did add a campden tablet as i want to bottle some as i shall be sending a bottle to the lovely lady who gave me the demi johns.
I`ve pinched half a glass and it tastes absolutely fab! i can`t believe that this is home made, it tastes better than the wine that we have been buying and is so incredibly cheap too. DH agrees and keeps trying to pinch some so i need to keep an eye on it.
Many many thanks jennyjelly for the wonderful recipe!

I've recently starting making wine. I started with a kit strawberry wine, just to get the hang of the process, then did an apple wine with apple juice (I actually don't like this as unsurprisingly it tastes like cider and I hate cider, so I am mostly cooking with it). I have blackberry wine plopping away in a demi john at the moment - my first attempt at doing it from scratch - and it's a bit early to know how it will turn out but it smells nice. I'm planning on trying rosehip once the hips have ripened, and will probably do another batch of blackberry (maybe a different recipe, for comparison) as there are flipping tons of them around here.0

2cats1kid, I used to make blackberry wine, and it was always lovely, one of the better fruity choices I reckonGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot0

I was wondering whether to have a try at blackberry once they are ripe up here, they are all still green at the moment.
Does anyone have a good recipe for it?
I like the juice way of doing things as it`s not a lot of messing about but will give fruit a go too i think.
I`m not sure if the red i have going is ok or not as it seems to have some lumpy stuff in the top, when it`s stopped bubbling i`ll inspect it and see whether or not it`s ok or needs to be chucked out.
