Child Element UC / Disabled Child

I have two children. One of whom is disabled. I am a full time carer for them and cannot work.

In my UC payments I receive approx £600 for the two children.

My disabled child is about to turn 18 and will be leaving full time education.

Do I loose £300 (half the £600) when they leave?  I'm worried as I cannot afford that drop in UC.

You will lose the child element and disabled child element for the 18 year old. Child benefit for them will also stop.

They will be able to claim UC in their own right. Unfortunately it’s something we all have to go through when they leave education.

This is what I feared. Times are gonna get hard. Thanks.

They should get the same money if not more in their own right. Are you their appointee? You can ask them for money for bills and food. You shouldn't be out of pocket.

The transition within the benefits system from dependant children to non dependant adults is difficult for many families.

Once they have their own income they can give you money towards their keep, and take over paying for some things themselves that you are currently funding.

  • Thanks everyone that replied.  I'm sure we can work it out....might need some delicate conversations.  I've been in this system 5 years, just about got money straight and a budget that works and now back to square one....hey ho...what can you do.

Just to check OP - are you receiving the Disabled Child Element as well as Child Element?

(It may sound a stupid question but I’ve known it to be missed).

    Ah OK - that’s fine.

(Sometimes it’s worth checking as I’ve known it to be missed - ditto when they switch from DLA to PIP as this can sometimes change the rate of Disabled Child Element).

If your Child does happen to stay on in full-time, non-advanced Education you will continue to receive the Child Element / Disabled Child Element up to the end of August following their 19th Birthday.

They will need to make their own claim and/or get a job, and give you keep.
