Old 78's

I have some old 78 records, and I have an old 'vintage' style record player, which has just packed up. I saw a record player online, which only played 45's and 33's.
But on Amazon there was another one which played all 3 speeds, so I phoned Richer Sounds about the first one, which they stocked, and they told me that there was a need of a different stylus for old 78's
So......how does this 'vintage' playi all speeds with the one stylus, before it packed up, and how does the one on Amazon play all speeds as well.

TIA

David.

Post a link and we'll have a look, a photo of the business end of your old "vintage" kit would be useful too. Do you have a make/model for it?

There used to be cartridges which turned over (through 180 degrees) and had two different types of stylus. one for 78s and the other for 33s and 45s.

    Showing my age now!

I assume somebody still makes something of that type. May well not be cheap.

But how does some units play all speeds, with the one stylus?

Sorry, never encountered one. Are you sure it is one stylus and not one cartridge with two styli as I have described?

It's an ancient thing which I inherited, and has now packed up. I've put a new fuse in, but still not working

They'll play all speeds, just not very well. If my memory is correct you need a much heavier "needle" to play 78s, that heavier needle would damage vinyls.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Not so much weight, the main difference is the width of the groove - much wider on 78s. The stylus tip needs a different profile.

somewhere in the distant past I've come across a record player that only showed 33 & 45 but if you pressed both buttons you got 78.  (33+45=78)

Take your current player to a Repair Cafe. The volunteers are of the mature type who will have experience of them and repair for a donation and cost of materials.

I've always had one where you flip the stylus though it would work sort of if you forget. Depends on the material of the 78 I believe.
Also you needed a bung over the central pin to play old jukebox 45s that had had the centre removed 😊

I was the bee's knees when I got a player where you could stack up to 8 records that would drop down and play one after another.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
