It won't. At least not well... https://www.audio-technica.com/en-gb/support/playing-78rpm-records explains.Supatramp said:But how does some units play all speeds, with the one stylus?
The ubiquitous solution was like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/297783946791 a flip-over 78 one side LP the other.
More expensive solutions involved changing the stylus the slotted into the cartridge or the plug-in tone arm head with a different cartridge/stylus combo.2 -
Next question - anyone got any 16 rpm records?1

Thank you - actually I was trying to be a little sarcastic because long before 33 & 45 came along you would see 16 and 78 and being a language course would fit in with the little I know about them. Don't think most will have heard of them.flaneurs_lobster said:

The family BSR autochanger record deck in the 70s had the flip stylus and played 16, 33, 45 and 78.
I also had some US "audio books" from a jumble sale that ran at 8 2/3 rpm, but never had anything to play them on.0 -
Good video here on trying to play 78s on new equipment and getting a good sound.

Thanks folks for your help/comments, I ended up going for the Phillips Stevie from Amazon for £129. It will do me, and the issue of the 78's I'll address later. Thanks again.David.0

I never knew that!Brie said:somewhere in the distant past I've come across a record player that only showed 33 & 45 but if you pressed both buttons you got 78. (33+45=78)
Presumably it would actually run at 78⅓ as the slower speed is 100 revolutions per three minutes.0
