Home Insurance needed

Hi, Can anyone help please?

Are there any insurance companies who will still provide quotes/cover without me knowing the measurements or the current market value of my house? (I've lived in the same house for almost 40 years)

In my experience, Aviva ask the fewest questions of any home insurance companies.

I have never been asked for any measurements of my house - purely how many bedrooms, bathrooms, external doors etc.

Also, I've never been asked for the market value of my house, just how much it would cost to rebuild it - and usually they have a link to an external site which estimates how much it will cost based on the individual house.

Don't forget the market value doesn't really matter - prices are wildly different depending on location but of course whatever happens to your house it's location will not change.

Nearly all of them I think. Generally just need to know how many bedrooms you have, what type of property and what it's built and roofed with. Many have a default buildings sum insured of £1m for the rebuilding cost (market value is irrelevant).

  • Thank you Peter999_2 and mebu60 for your replies.

The form linked to the comparison tool (as per your link above mebu60) is what prompted my question.

The rebuild cost is estimated using the property details and postcode, but the market value isn't. That figure has to be entered manually, and without it it won't let you proceed to the next page.

Only needs to be rough estimate. Any similar properties around you sold recently?

I had problems arranging insurance. We had specialist insurance whilst our house was being renovated and then we completely forgot to arrange new insurance to make it continuous.

Trying to get "Compare the Meerkat" insurance was an issue due to the gap in our coverage. An abortive call to Co-op Insurance Services did however yield a referral to BIBA. They were terrific and I had a quote within an hour from Adrian Flux, that I accepted

The number I called was 0370-9501790

I am NOT connected with the company, but am a genuine happy customer

    Regards

I'd be tempted to just repeat the calculated rebuild figure in the market value box if it's needed to progress.

I suspect it's only in the comparison form because a small minority of insurers want to know - chances are that your preferred choice doesn't care so the answer won't matter.

Almost no one wants either, never been asked for measurements and rarely for market value. If you use comparison sites though they ask every question that anyone of any materiality on their panel wants asked even if 99% of the panel arent interested.

There are two simple options, the safest is simply to get quotes from lots of different companies off their own sites where the majority will only ask for either rebuild value or a count of the number of rooms in the property. Alternatively the slightly more risky option is to go with a best guess on the comparison site but when you click through to the firm you want to buy from go through the quote again on their system. If the offending questions arent shown you are fairly but not 100% sure that they arent using those questions in the rating.
