Purchased a tumble dryer

Purchased a tumble drier oct 2021 and company installed it in an outside garage
Only used about 10 times so immaculate
Three weeks ago it started fusing the electrics in the garage where it had been installed by them I paid for installation
I paid for electric check and paid for new sockets and dryer initially started working In 5 minutes it fused electrics again
I reported this to supplier  who said to get it checked out by an Engineer and summit a report
The report said nothing could be found wrong with the dryer itself except that it should never been installed in a cold  uninsulated garage  where temperatures  would drop below 5 degrees and that a large amount of condensation was found in the back
I believe I was sold a dryer not fit for my purpose
Can anyone advise
It wasn't cheap £275 plus installation

Did you specify that you required a dryer that could be installed in an outbuilding?

    Who chose the location?

  • It was 4 years ago when it was installed. Maybe if you can find who installed it you may be able to claim that they installed incorrectly or should have advised that the location is not suitable. However if you told the installer exactly where you wanted it then it could be on you.
Did you get an installation receipt to say it was installed correctly - this may help?

The engineer report confirms there's nothing wrong with the dryer.

These seem to be two key questions. What do the dryer installation instructions say regarding location?
If the supplier advertised it as being suitable for use in an unheated outbuilding, or if you told them you needed one for that location and they recommended the one you bought, you might have a claim.
Of course, it's four years old now and a four year old dryer is worth considerably less than a new one.

You've posted this in Praise, Vent and Warnings.

I think you'd be better in the consumer rights forum.

If you asked a company to supply and fit a machine suitable for installation in an unheated outbuilding then you may have a case.

If you just purchased the dryer and had it delivered and installed all they are responsible for is a safe installation in the place of your choice.

Possibly, the very infrequent use could be a part of the issue as it means the internal heat generation has not been there to prevent moisture / condensation getting into the control circuits.

I was thinking along similar lines - rather than paying £275 for ten drying runs in four years, it would've been better to use a laundrette.
Presumably OP expected to make much more use of it, but circumstances changed?

  • Unless you specifically told the company you were buying the dryer from that it was going into an unheated outbuilding and they told you that it would be suitable, it's not unfit for purpose. It's just not suitable for the purpose you're putting it to. The real question is whether the installers are responsible for knowing that, and whether they warned you. Or if there's any smallprint on your paperwork stating that they don't take responsibility for where you choose to have it installed, etc.
I think you might struggle to get them to take responsibility for the installation location when you chose it yourself. But as it's tripping the fuses because it's got condensation in it, surely you can resolve that problem but drying it out and maybe making sure the hot, wet air is ejected outside the building?
