Utility Warehouse

I'm not happy.  To help a friend I signed up with them in April/May 2024.  I got a load of stuff:  mobile phone, cashback thingy etc.  I never used any of it  Then I got a demand for £9.94 in May 2024 for the SIM (which I'd never used) so naturally I ignored it.  A couple of months ago UW reported me to Equifax as a defaulter so my credit score has been slashed.  I paid the £9.94 to get the black mark lifted (even though I was paying for something I never had) but to no avail,  UW have said that it will not rectify the Equifax entry.  My advice is to steer clear of Utility Warehouse.

The fact that you didn't use a SIM that you'd acquired doesn't mean that you weren't obliged to pay for it if you were contractually committed?

Paying the £9.94 belatedly isn't 'to get the black mark lifted' but is simply repaying the debt - your credit files will accurately reflect the fact that you failed to meet your contractual obligations and settling the debt later doesn't change that.

The fact you never used is, is not the point. This is the way they work, sign you up for various services which you get a discount on. The more you sign up to the greater the discount.
So you need to go back & check exactly which services you signed up to.

As you had not paid the bill the default is a matter of fact, as such it is correct it is reported.

As a aside you score means nothing to anyone but the CRA's, But your credit file/history will be showing missed payments. Which is something that will effect getting further credit going forward.

An odd thing to do.  Why?  Was there some sort of referral bonus your friend got as a result of you contracting with UW?

Entering into a contract you don't understand to help a friend wasn't a good idea.  I can see why UW won't rectify the record.  It sounds like you didn't meet your contractual commitment and only paid the debt when it was escalated.  That's the whole point of the record - it tells other prospective customers you're a bit of a risk.
