MSE way not to pay hundreds a year to David Lloyd, but to join the local council leisure card scheme.  Ours charges £20 a month, which allows access to any of the leisure centres, all gyms and classes.

Regardless of anything in the Terms and Conditions, The Consumer Rights Act 2015 will apply.
Part 2 Section 62 says that an unfair contract is not binding on the consumer.  Schedule 2 gives a list of unfair terms, including "A term which has the object or effect of giving the trader the discretion to decide the price payable under the contract after the consumer has become bound by it, where no price or method of determining the price is agreed when the consumer becomes bound."
So if there are to be price increases during a fixed term contract, then the terms must either set out what those price increases will be, or else allow the customer to cancel the contract if they don't agree with the increase.  Anything else is unfair and unenforceable.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

There has been a massive increase in business rates, with some companies bill increasing 4 fold or more
I'm not sure that's accurate, leisure businesses had a rate relief (100% up to £110k I believe) and that rate relief has been cut to 40% rather than it being a rate increase. There has been revaluations causing bills to jump, that's based on the rateable value of the business premises but is because rateable values for some businesses (those hit hardest by the pandemic) were low during the last round of revaluations after Covid.

They've had a discount and are now going back to paying closer to the usual rate rather than facing an increase.

I make a point of cycling or running past my local gym regularly, so I have the mental satisfaction of knowing I'm exercising for nothing!  I do accept that the gym offers things I can't cheaply replicate, though.

Yes, running doesn't really replicate a gym - unless the only thing you do in the gym is go on a treadmill/exercies bike.

I run and go to the gym.
Running is only cardio.  The gym also offers resistance training and the pool.  It is also good to vary the cardio exercises to achieve a more all round fitness and relieve pressure on the joints.

    Try this gym.

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

    Hi there,

I have just had notice that my David Lloyd gym membership is going up 13.5% in January! This is way beyond inflation, is it not?

I have not tried to negotiate yet, but wondered what my rights were? Any ideas?

    Thank you in advance everyone!
I laugh at your 13.5%. Ours has just gone up 62% to £482 for a couple and one 18 year old child.

We have already taken off our other child. It would otherwise mean me earning a gross £12500pa just to cover the gym fees.

    That isn't even including tennis.

    I've given notice to leave.

£160 per person per month?  Crikey.  I'm not surprised you're leaving.  Hopefully they'll be like Virgin Media and come back with a big last-minute discount to retain three members.
  • 13.5% has the club changed bands?

Mine has gone you / will be going you by 3.4% I think the T&C is if they increase in contract at more than inflation (RPI July) + 1% then you can request a cancellation.

I will be cancelling mine in April when the 12 months is up, the fees really do not support the standard of the club.
Things are constantly closed, the place is always so busy that is uncomfortable and getting on equipment is a nightmare and dont even mention the car parking.
