Not sure if the right forum - I think I overpaid income tax by about £1000 through PAYE in the 24-25 tax year. I saw somewhere that HMRC have usually sorted refunds out by October, should I be contacting them?

The timescale seems to have been extended in the last couple of years.kimwp said:Not sure if the right forum - I think I overpaid income tax by about £1000 through PAYE in the 24-25 tax year. I saw somewhere that HMRC have usually sorted refunds out by October, should I be contacting them?

The HMRC app and the online personal tax account are virtually the same. You should be able to navigate to the attached message.kimwp said:

My income tax for 24-25 is showing:
Taxable income: £35,705.79
Income tax: £5,858.12 - which I think is too much
5858.12 / (35,705.79-12,570) = 25%Statement of Affairs (SOA) link: https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/financecalculators/soa.phpFor free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. Beware fee charging companies with similar names.0 -
I just threw that through the tax calculator and it saidTotal refund due£1,231.001

How can anyone know what the correct answer is without knowing what types of income (and amounts) are included in the £35,705 🤔monkey-fingers said:I just threw that through the tax calculator and it saidTotal refund due£1,231.000 -
I'm taking it at face value - hence why throwing it in the calculator.Dazed_and_C0nfused said:

It doesn't actually ask many questions.
It assumes that you have a straight 1257L tax code, no pension (which I find odd) or any salary sacrifice or benefits.
In terms of PAYE, if that is indeed the case, then it's rather cut and dried.
That's not to say that they might have to self-assess because of dividends, interest and other taxable income. But that has nothing to do with PAYE.0 -
Oops sorry, that's PAYE only. My tax code changed from 12570 to 1236 in February 2025 for untaxed interest. But 24-25 was the first year I had to pay savings interest and dividends were negligible. (But those would reduce the tax bill anyway, with the allowances and lower rates?)Statement of Affairs (SOA) link: https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/financecalculators/soa.phpFor free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline.
