Definitely won't happen,  these cases take between 6 and 12 months, so strap in for the ride 

You can expect them to discontinue next spring or summer,  so after step 8, next year 

So have a good xmas etc and keep following those 8 steps

I promised I would come back with an update, so here it is.

Thank you all for your help. My friend got to the 'mediation' stage and decided to offer £40 which was accepted. I did advise her to not offer anything and to wait for the process to play out, but she just wanted to get it over with. I suppose it's better than paying £260+. So not a complete win, but not a complete loss either.

I haven't been following consumer news recently. But my support worker told me he'd ended up with a CCJ because the post is so bad these days that he missed all deadlines by the time letters reached him. It's appalling!

Thanks for your support. I've no doubt this will happen again to people I know, and I feel much more confident that I'll be able to offer help in future.

No problem, sometimes people will pay between £5 and say £50 to make it go away, regardless of how strong their defence case is ! Uts a personal choice, although £20 is a more common settlement

Had they lost in court, but had followed the process properly, with no deadlines missed, a more typical loss could have been between £180 and £220, so say 5 times the agreed settlement figure
