DFG - Do we have to agree with the assessors proposal?

My daughter has Muscular Dystrophy and we have applied for a DFG to allow us to convert the garage for a bedroom and bathroom. The proposal is to have a hydrotherapy bath as this will help her muscles but the DFG assessor has proposed a shower with shower chair. Ideally we would have a bath initially and if required in the future we can remove the bath and have a shower area. This can be done as per Part M with adaptable bathrooms.
Do we have to agree to a shower if that's what the assessors proposal states?

You have proposed the bath, the assessor has proposed a shower. So it's a matter of negotiation to work out which proposal is the right one. (Taking into account needs and costs).I'm not sure what the system is nowadays, but do remember negotiating what to include when my grandmother had an equivalent grant some years ago for 'downstairs facilities'.No doubt someone with more recent experience will be along.1

Sadly the assessors view will carry a lot of weight.. i've just been through this. Even with my OT understanding the need for a certain feature and supporting it and saying yep its the right thing the assessor over ruled it.
You will nee dto make a case with as much evidence as possible for the hydrotherapy bath.
The council try to do the most affordable adaptation that meets the persons needs.. so stress how it doesnt meet your daughters needs, and how the hydro bath would enhance her quality of life, support her MD etc.
They also try to future proof so they dont end up funding a DFG again.. so if they feel a shower/ wetroom is likely needed in future they may put more emphasis on that even though its not best fit now it does mean she would still be able to get clean.
You or your daugter as the client will have to sign off and approve the plans.. so there is certainly room to discuss, negotiate and add evidence etc, but sadly no guarantees they will come around.
It is usually possible to 'top-up' a dfg to get something that you prefer but this must still meet the clients needs. Ive done this many years ago for my first dfg by funding a bigger sink and different tiles in my wetroom.
For my second dfg I refused a door they suggested and was left with a doorway and no door. The only door they would fund was not suitable for many reasons one of which being there was not space for it to open and me to use my wheelchair.
I really hope they see sense.. start by politely asking to discuss the bath/ shower option and present your case1
