Hastings Direct insurance & "data sharing"

Just taken out insurance since Direct Line were ridiculous this year.
T&Cs of this HD policy is you have the app. Also mentions "data sharing" which isn't yet live.

What exactly is likely to be shared here?
Are they somehow using the app on your phone to track your speed so when you're 31+ in a 30 they'll then contact you to say your premium is going up?
Or are they likely to be selling your email & phone number off so that you're then going to get bombarded night & day with nonsense?

Took the policy out as it was all round the cheapest deal & need cover for tomorrow. Just curious about this data sharing thing though.

  • The answer could be that most of these companies are part of some other entity. If company A owns companies b c d e then no doubt there will be a master database held by company A.

Ever noticed when inputting your personal details that th e form tends to complate itself.

My wife used to shop at M&S and signed up to SPARKS. That was simply a means of getting personal information for the big database in the sky. So many companies are interelated that the data is available to people you have never heard of. Once you are on the master list it is no longer sharing.

I was told that when you go on insurance comparison sites then you have actually given your details to everyone of the named companies and they can actually look at the other quotes you have received.

    Have also been told this.

And also know of a guy who had his insurance policy cancelled because information he declared to his previous had not been declared to his new. New company found out & cancelled the policy.

So he tried to commit fraud and got caught, zero sympathy.

Insurance companies have been sharing data for years (you agreed to it, check the small print). Helped stop what was the very common fraud of making the same (false) claim on several different policies (expensive camera/watch/ring lost on holiday with five different travel policies was a favorite), but now includes a wider set of data.

Similar to how the finance companies share your debt data with the credit reference agencies.

    Lol and?

I never said you should have sympathy. Was merely stating a situation.

I asked the question on Saturday at Curry's - They used to email a receipt at one time. No longer but Head Office have a record should you have a problem. Had a problem a few months ago when trying to find a receipt for an Argos purchase. Strangly enough I broke my rule and paid cash instead of by card and have lost the receipt. They were very good and sorted out my warranty claim but
