88 year old driver car insurance claim - impact on renewal?

Would anyone know how car insurance price or insurability may change if an 88 year old driver claims.

My parent, 88 years old, nil previous claims, hit a wall avoiding another car (which didnt stop).  Damage is relatively minor but will need a replacement bonet (which is creased) and some other parts.  Local body shop estimate is £1500+ non insurance, 2nd hand parts, £2500+ via insurance.

Current fully comprehensive annual premium is about £750 (has been rising over recent years, im guessing due to age).  Nil No Claims bonus protection.

I'm guessing the insurance could double next renewal with loss of no claims discount, plus there's the excess £250 to consider (so technically £1000 plus out of pocket first year (and higher premiums subsequent years) if claiming via insurance?

Any thoughts on insurance renewal cost impact / similar experience, would be much appreciated?

  • How much is the car worth? It may be written off.

As to future insurance costs, it's a guess. Do a dummy quote with a claim on a comparison site.

The terms of his policy almost certainly require him to report the incident even if he is not going to make a claim. He risks his policy being cancelled if not.

He hit a third party’s wall so a claim against him could be made by ty that party, or if he had a second accident the repair for this damage could be found.

Not worth the risk of not going through his insurance.
