My favourite way to have hot breakfast cereal* as a child was to have it topped with ice cream and maple syrup.
*We rarely had oatmeal but had something called Red River Cereal which is produced in Ontario. It's a mix of cracked wheat, rye and flax. It needs to cook for at least 10 minutes but 15 is better to get it properly soft. It's lovely. I don't think it's available in the UK and while you can order online there's nothing to show they ship outside of North America.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. I soak my oats in water over night with dried fruit and then zap for a minute in the morning, works for me, I like adding peanut butter or fresh banana or even sometimes cinimon and grated apple . but the best is always brown sugar in a layer on top loltoday's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

So many lovely ideas showing the versatility of porridge!
A spoonful of my fruity homemade mincemeat (no suet in it) goes very well with porridge. Based on Pam Corbin’s recipe. Also, things like baked plums, bananas, or peaches, any HM compote. Hemp seed boosts the protein and although it changes the texture a little bit, I find it keeps me going for longer. A drizzle of syrup and a dollop of clotted cream is my occasional unhealthy option though! I also like baked porridge.
I have never tried any of the savoury versions of porridge as I can’t quite bring myself to.0 -
I peel, core and chop apples into chunks and then place in my slow cooker on "high" for about 3 hours covered - I then reduce to "low" setting for a further 4 hours or so - uncover for a final hour and it reduces nicely. I stir regularly.Glad said:
Can I ask how you make your apple butter pleasethriftwizard said:I soak mine overnight with a tiny pinch of salt, then cook & eat it in the morning with HM apple butter, greek yogurt & a sprinkle of nuts or seeds. OH has his with milk & jam.
I add chopped ginger or cinnamon at the start. I have added sugar during the process if it is starting to taste too sour - I usually use up oddments of demerara sugar etc from my pantry. No two batches are ever the same!!
I store in jars in my fridge.
Good luck - it's great to have the taste of summer in the midst of winter!

had some left over this morning, A google search came up with this? Recipes using leftover porridge
- Pancakes: Combine cold porridge with flour, eggs, and milk. Add mashed banana for extra sweetness and consistency.
- Baked oatmeal: Mix the cold porridge with ingredients like eggs, flour, and fruit, and bake it in a dish for a hearty breakfast bar or cake.
- Muffins: Incorporate leftover porridge into your next batch of muffin batter for added moisture and texture.
- Smoothies: Add a couple of tablespoons of porridge to your smoothie for a creamier, thicker consistency and extra fiber.
- Meatloaf or meatballs: Use it as a substitute for breadcrumbs to help bind the mixture.
- Fried porridge: Slice the cold porridge and pan-fry it in butter until golden brown. Serve with toppings like jam or cream.
- Bread: Mix leftover porridge with flour, water, yeast, and salt to make a unique bread.
- Cookies: Add leftover porridge directly into your favorite cookie recipe for chewy, oatmeal-flavored cookies.
- has anyone done one of these ?

I've used leftover oatmeal in meatloaf and cookies. Meat loaf - just throw in a cup or so, in cookies, use in place of some of the dry ingredients.1

I also don't understand the concept of "leftover porridge" I make enough for me, and no more.

The traditional fast food here was Staffordshire Oatcakes, home made or sold at the kitchen window. I blitz porridge oats for frugal oat flour.
Sorry about the awful ads on this link, her recipes are very good.
