So called 'AI' and overseas travel (Note: For 'AI' substitute 'Algorithms')

Fraudulent card transactions generally fall on the card issuer so they generally have a low risk appetite with some issuers are more risk adverse than others... Things like location, type of transaction, customer spend pattern and value will all feed into their decision making.

If any credit card becomes repeatedly inconvenient then ditch and switch.

Again probably a silly question but when you were in China in transit or when you were in your taxi cabs were you connected to the internet either via Wi-Fi or maybe via a locally purchase SIM or whatever?

I only ask because whenever I have a transaction that can be seen as out of the ordinary I always get a pop-up on the app asking me to fingerprint authorise it but of course you have to be online to get it

I don't think really the banks have asked for information on overseas travel to be pre-notified for a very long time.  I don't think any of the banks I have accounts with even have the facility to give that pre-notification plus the volume of notifications would be extremely high given the ease and affordability of overseas travel.

I do always try to make a card purchase at the port if travelling overseas, so that the algorithms can see that you have travelled.

In my experience triggering the algorithms is not easy to do.  I think I only had to verify overseas spend once and that was a weekend in France where our spend locations had been unusual.
     - Portsmouth docks Friday evening.
     - Ordered a birthday present for my Nephew from an online retailer in Sydney but while on the ferry
     - Paid for stuff in France Saturday morning
     - Paid for the car service (in UK) but remote payment, Saturday morning before the car was dropped back home
     - Paid for more stuff in France later Saturday morning
I guess that geography is not common.

Good question, but no, in China, because I knew I had a fairly long wait, I'd bought a roaming add-on  and in Thailand I have a Thai SIM that I keep alive and they have excellent 5G.

I think it's just NatWest and RBS who specifically ask you to advise them, and Santander have the option to advise them on their site.
