Probate Forms

Hello everyone, after having my Dad's house valued yesterday I am now in the position to fill in the Probate forms.

I was just interested to hear from people who have done this online.

Can you go through the form first to make sure you have everything to hand or is it a one shot deal were you have to complete it all the first time?.

If I download the paper forms to have a look are they the same as the online ones?.

Also do I take off any debts owed and funeral expenses out of his bank account total?. The bank are releasing funds for the funeral.

The estate is well under IHT so so I need to contact HMRC at all (I have stopped his pension with the Tell Us Once code).

Thanks, Keith.

The Form will save itself as you go (don't switch the PC off!!) and there is a short list of the information you require on the start page. Essentially the paper Form is the same, there should be nothing that throws you.  I do though tend to print and complete the paper Form before I start; just an old habit.

With an Excepted Estate the funeral/debts don't really matter as no IHT will be due. Likewise as no IHT will be due there is no need to contact HMRC. However, you may need to declare CGT if any is made by the time you sell the property; as a point you have 60 days to do that.

Whilst you have stopped his Pension, there may still be payments to be made to him given they are paid in arrears. It takes them a few weeks to act, but given what you have said, a single part payment up to his DOD isn't going to change much anyway.

Be patient its a government Form - Good luck.

Thanks @gjcody that is all great advice.

I'll print the paper one off first and go from there.

Hopefully have a go tonight after work.

    Cheers, Keith.

Well, I can find the covering letter for my Dad's Decree Absolute but I can't find the certificate.

Had to apply to have it found on the GOV website so that will set me back another month or more.

Getting a bit fed up with it all now.

Oh dear,.  As I said be patient, it is a very trying time of course but use these problems to take a break from it all.  Every cloud, etc.  Did you get all the way through the Form to see if there were any more holes you may fall in?  May be an idea if not.
