Santander cheque clearance process

I have a couple of cheques I wrote a couple of months back that seem to not have been submitted yet. I'm not inclined to nudge the organisations they were to as I may as well get the interest, but I'm wondering if I will get any warning from Santander when they are about to be taken out of my account as this will put me close to overdraft if all are cashed at the same time.

You will not get any warning.

However, being aware you have written those cheques you really should be keeping sufficient funds in your account for when they are presented.

One cheque not being put through for payment by one organisation might be inefficiency or laziness by the organisation... but more than one would make me wonder if there was a problem with the cheques.

Would these organisations have come back to you if they presented the cheque(s) and they were returned unpaid?

If the cheques were to yourself for building society accounts I would probably be proactive and find out what the problem is, there's no guarantee the building society would pay interest if the problem was with you or your bank.

I know exactly who it is. He's very scattergun in terms of giving out bills and cashing cheques (and bringing the car back after he's fixed it at the time he says he's going to!!!!)

    So just the one person?

As Ayr_Rage says, you won't get advance warning from Santander when the cheques are presented for payment, although if you've got alerts set up you might get a notification of whatever action they have taken.

Also bear in mind if the cheque is more than six months old one or the other banks might refuse to process it.  So to avoid the hassle of having to make the payment(s) a second time (and possibly ensuring the old cheques won't be presented again) then you might want to give them a nudge well before the six months are up.
