The next steps, how do I close a bank account after a death, and release the funds

I'm sorry for the situation.Nationwide 'no probate' limit is £50k BUT with no will they may not be able to deal with you. First step is to freeze the account, call their bereavement team on 0800 464 30 18. They will know the exact situation and advise if they can deal with you. You can send them a scan of the death certificate by email but replies come by extremely slow post.1

Virgin Money released funds from my Dad's account to pay for the funeral (Paid the Undertakers directly after I submitted the invoice).
The account is locked until probate has been dealt with.
Maybe look up intestacy to get an idea of who is in charge of the estate (should be his son I would have thought).0
