As it's a money saving forum, id also say the glasses should never cost 500.

That's for two pairs, designer frames with the thinnest and lightest lens material they offer.  The lenses cost considerably more than the frames.
Yep, they hit you with the upsell. I bet if you got a pair made up with the basic lenses you couldn't tell the difference.

For that price you might as well go to a proper local optician, or go to Asda and get their perfectly decent cheap frames and lenses which will do the job just as well.
As someone who needs glasses that are much like the bottom of a beer glass going for thin/light lenses makes a massive difference.  Particularly to the bridge of my nose!!  And I've been quoted upwards of £800 for standard glasses due to the prescription required.

Asda is, in my opinion, worse that SS.  I tried them a couple of times and they never got the glasses right.  Even to the point of when I ordered sunglasses and they came back as just glasses!!  Another time they had one lens correct and the other with plain glass with no adjustment.

But yes there is an upsell at SS.  They were trying to get me once on their great BOGOF deal and I asked what if I only needed one pair.  Apparently it costs less!!  So not a BOGOF after all!!!

I used SS for years but they began to push extras and push me up the price range of frames and like OP I never felt distance was just right, I'm short sighted.
Last two pairs have come from Eyecare at Morrisons. No pushing me into extras and dearer frames, felt confident with the person testing me and distance was perfect. Had two prescriptions now and were cheaper than SS.

Not that it's got anything to do with the subject of the thread at all, but none of that is correct.

No upsell - I asked for two two pairs, one for distance, one for screen work. I chose the frames I preferred.

With my prescription 'basic' lenses would be too thick and heavy to be comfortable.

If I go anywhere else, it won't be Asda.

I think when it comes to specs which people wear all day, every day, the cost/cheapness shouldn't be the main consideration, comfort, weight and durability are much more important especially if you need thicker lenses.

Personally I haven't used Specsavers for well over a decade, disliked the eye test, the upsell and ultimately the glasses were never super comfortable.

I've never gone to a supermarket, fearing a similar experience. Instead I've used chains like Cubitts (preferred) Ollie Quinn (ok), and Jimmy Fairley (lots of upsell but no problem giving me the prescription). Current glasses are from Ace&Tate with the JF prescription.

It seems unusual that a new prescription would be weaker than an older one ... usually your eye muscle strength deteriorates as you start wearing glasses, meaning that subsequent prescriptions get gradually stronger - that's certainly my experience.

Then again, I'm long-sighted ... I can read long distance stuff very easily and only need glasses for reading.
It's absolutely normal for short sighted people to improve over time as everyone gets more long sighted as they get older and why older people without sight issues need reading glasses the older they get. At my worst I was -6.75 I am now -4 and can read without glasses now
  • I don't think in any case you can blame the company.  I've been with SS for 25 years and only had 1 problem.  That was with a very young member of staff, but the rest have been great

I used to be on a forum with someone who worked for SS.

The staff were badgered to upsell.  She would not do it and eventually left because of the pressure.

    Nobody said it did.

People are saying why they do not use SS.
  • Why be pressured into upsell ,just say no .
